# Unvalidated npm trusted publishing configurations now expire

Markdown version of <https://harbyn.com/changes/npm/2026-10-02-unvalidated-npm-trusted-publishing-configurations-now-expire>.

Breaking change - npm. medium severity. In effect.

Unvalidated npm trusted publishing configurations now expire 48 hours after creation and can no longer authorize publishing; a configuration becomes validated and exempt after its first successful publish. npm also now rejects trusted publishing tokens from GitHub Actions issue\_comment events, like pull\_request\_target; workflows that publish on issue\_comment must move to push, release or workflow\_dispatch.

This change names no identifier the scanner can match line by line, so the scan tells you whether your repository uses npm, from its packages and API hosts. Nothing leaves your machine.
